Welcome to Longcot & Fernham School

Governors' page

Welcome to the school's governing body page. The members of the governing body are proud to be associated with the school and aim for the children attending Longcot and Fernham school to have a broad, interesting and challenging education. As a governing body, working with Mr David Howlett, headteacher, and all school staff, our focus is to facilitate the ongoing development of the school .

We are an open, accesible governing body and publish the majority of our documents in PDF format on this website. Word versions can be obtained from office.3232@longcot-and-fernham.oxon.sch.uk

The full Governing Body meets 4 times a year and has 12 full members as well as a PTA representative. There are a number of committees and subcommittees, including Premises and Health and Safety, Finance, Pay and Curriculum.

The school is fortunate to have many proactive teaching staff coordinators, governors and the headteacher who are together developing many exciting new initiatives. These are detailed in the current School Development Plan and include: the rolling out of French language teaching thoughout the school since 2006; gifted and talented teaching programme in literacy and maths; successful development of many Eco projects - resulting in the Green Flag Eco Status Award, to be presented to the school by Ed Vaizey, MP on 4th April 2008; linking with schools in France and Uganda; enabling pupils in class 3 to learn the guitar through the Oxfordshire vocal and instrument programme.

Over the past 2 years we have implemented many plans to improve the school buildings. The 4 phase planning application was approved by Oxfordshire County Council in November 2006. Phase 1, the new multi use games area was completed in July 2007. This was funded by £30,000 raised by the PTA in 6 months!!! There was much excitement in July 2007when parents, pupils, sponsors and members of the local community attended the Grand Opening (see photo above). The MUGA is available for members of the local community to use as well. Many children and adults enjoy playing tennis and ball games over the summer and winter for free.

The second phase, new school offices were completed in June 2008. The School Travel Plan was approved by Oxfordshire County Council in 2007 providing £12,000 in funding towards an improved school entrance and roadside path completed in August 2008.

Phase 3 (the substantive rebuild of class 2, which is currently in a portacabin) and phase 4 (building a new community room and expanding the school hall) have planning permission, but require funding.

The views of pupils and parents are very important to the governing body as we plan the future development of the school. We have recently sent the results of the 2007 parents questionnaire to parents as well as the 2007 pupils questionnaire.
